Just thought i'd throw my 2 cents in,i also agree that Custer had shot himself or at least had someone to do it for him (Lt.Cooke maybe?).In any event like you said it does'nt make him a coward.It was the accepted rule at the time and i reckon we'd all choose that method given the time and circumstances.
