Check out an index to the 1850 Census for Milam county, Texas, at
http://www.geocities.com/milamco/milam-015.htm
It lists George E. Pickett, Lt. U.S. Army, age 25, born Va.
I have culled out all the entries for those at the military
location: a captain, 3 lieutenants besides George E. Pickett,
half a dozen sergeants, a few corporals, the rest just listed
as "soldier"-- mostly born outside the U.S. One lieutenant
named Horace Haldeman had his wife and two children along. The
five musicians are all but one born in Ireland, including 16 year
old Michael O'Day, probably the drummer boy. One musician and one
"soldier" apparently had their wives with them, both listed as "laundress". (Wo-- I know the name of the ladies who washed Lt.
Pickett's shirts.....) There are a couple of muleteers, a "servant" and a surgeon. That last is scary: the surgeon, Edward
W. Johns of Maryland, was aged 23....
I think this is interesting snapshot in time of the surroundings
of young George Pickett, just after the Mexican War--- long
before that sad and illustrious day at Gettysburg.
