: Wayne, I too loved the movie; I've only seen it about 35 times. I'm sure John Wayne knew enough of the history of the battle to know Crockett didn't die as depicted in his movie, but took advantage of his right as director/producer or whatever to show him dying in this dramatic, heroic way. As far as the rumors about Davey and several others having surrendered or being captured, as a good old Texas boy, I don't want to believe it. But I have read several accounts, one in Texas Monthly magazine a few years ago stating just that. It's hard to conceive of him surrendering, but I could see very easily where he could have been captured after Old Betsy fired her single shot, was broken after having been used as a club, if that's accurate, probably being wounded and would have fought to the death but for being captured rather than shot or bayoneted. But it's my right to believe he wouldn't have just surrendered. I'd have to re-read my books on the Alamo to see what the different accounts say. I'm really not sure just how forgiving the Mexicans would have been to have captured anyone after their heavy losses. I think they would have slaughtered anyone they found, well or wounded. I'd like to hear what other folks have to say. As I said, there is an article or book out there somewhere that gives a credible story to his having been captured.
The current consensus is that Crockett, along with severalothers did surrender. Most were wounded and barely able to stand. When Santa Anna saw the prisoners, he went ballistic. He ordered his soldiers to execute the prisoners immediately . They were all killed in cold blood with swords and bayonettes.
An excellent book on The Alamo is Three Roads to The Alamo by William C Davis. This is only a couple of years old and easily bought just about anywhere.
