: Although I enjoyed this movie immensely, I also know that Mr. Wayne took a great deal of liberty in straying from the true story. Does anyone know if this is because he felt the true story would not have been as dramatic on film?
Just released is "The Alamo" on DVD. On it is a 40 minute, behind-the-scenes, documentary. Great stuff. Wayne seemed to feel this WAS the story, in many ways. See the DVD, if you can, I think it'll answer your question.
: Also, what is the current thought on the theory that Crockett and a few others survived the battle only to be executed later on Santa Anna's order?
Though it goes against the grain somewhat, there is documentation that several defenders DID surrender at the end ... who can blame them? At some point, it would seem the thing to to. Certainly, as he demonstrated plainly at Goliad, Santa Anna was capable of executing surrendered prisioners. I think it makes sense. There is no eye-witness account, to my knowledge, that contradicts this idea. There IS eye-witness testimony to support it.
