John Wayne's "The Alamo"

Although I enjoyed this movie immensely, I also know that Mr. Wayne took a great deal of liberty in straying from the true story. Does anyone know if this is because he felt the true story would not have been as dramatic on film? Also, what is the current thought on the theory that Crockett and a few others survived the battle only to be executed later on Santa Anna's order?
