Steven: I am merely a very interested student of the American Civil War and noticed your posting. I doubt I can add anything to your research, but in a quick look at some materials I have at home, I noticed that your GGGrandfather's brigade was commanded by Col. William L.J. Lowrance (as Gen. Scales was wounded on July 1, 1863). Lowrance has an official battle report in the Official Records, ser.1, vol. 27 part 2, pgs. 671-672. You may want to look at that. Also, there is a letter available from Lt. Burwell T. Cotton, 34th NC, July 16, 1863 in Michael Taylor's book, "The Cry is War, War, War!" published by Morningside Books, Dayton, Ohio 1994, pgs. 147-149. Your GGGrandfather's regiment was the 3rd regiment from the right, 160 yards behind Pettigrew's right, in the rear line of battle, at the beginning of the charge. I don't know the final position. I think it would be fair to speculate that they were hit with considerable flank artillery fire. Regardless of his final postion, it is also necessary to say that any soldier that stepped from the woods on seminary ridge that afternoon possessed extraordinary courage and no post battle controversy could or should take away from that. My respects, Ron Federici
: My GGGrandfather was with Company D, 34th NC Infr. under Col. Lowarance of Scales Brigade, Pender's Div., A.P. Hill's Corps ANV. I have done some studying on the position of the 34th during the charge. It appears that they did reach the wall at the angle with Trimble. Every Officer was shot down and several men were captured as they went over the wall. My ancestor's records show he was taken prisoner 7/3/63 with minie ball injury to hand.
: The reason i want to know is we are doing a grave site dedication for him in Centerville, Arkansas this summer and i want to make darn sure i have it right. It has been very nerve racking trying to verify all the information out there on this charge and the men that were part of it.
: Can anyone support this data or give me some in-site on the possition of the 34th and what really happened. i would also like to know of any brigade histories out there or items that may help me verify this data.
: Any help would be most appreciated!!
