Roger - I,ve sat on both sides of the Custer persona too but the more I've read the more I came to admire him as an exceptional man of his time. Certainly he was not without flaws . He was a warrior and a leader. He had a destiny. You could not create him as fiction. He was complex. He was not the racist glory hunter that the "politically correct" generation likes to depict him as being. He certainly was't the looney portrayed in Little Big Man. In fact I don't think any movie has ever portrayed him accurately. He will , I guess, always be controversial but I hate to see him maligned by people who judge him through ignorance.
