: : In paragraph #5, line #1, substitute "hypocritical" for "ingenuous". I'm embarrassed by this mistake, but mistakes should be corrected when the truth is discovered...right???
: Did you ever dig into Custer's real personality?
Everything I've read about Custer's military career, spanning his performance at the Academy, the Civil War, and fighting American Indians, points to courage, offset by reckless impulsiveness. This, combined with being given so much power at such a young/immature age (for the responsibility given him), laid the groundwork for disaster. General/President Grant was also criticized as having lost more men under his command than other officers of the same rank, to the extent of being called a butcher by some northerners toward the end of the War, but he was never labeled reckless, and most certainly was never called to a Court Martial for insubordination. Custer was vain and lucky, which made him a star to many people reading romantic newspaper stories. However, he was no hero to many of his superior officers, subordinate troops, or innocent native populations defending their homes and families.
Your question insinuates a knowledge of Custer which you would like to share. Please say a few words about his "real" personality. Looking forward to being enlightened.
