EASLEY URGES STATE TO
ACQUIRE PARKLAND IN THE
DUPONT FOREST
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

(Raleigh, NC) - Attorney General Mike Easley
today encouraged state leaders to explore options
for acquiring parkland in the Dupont Forest. The
land, which includes Triple Falls, Bridal Veil Falls
and High Falls, has been purchased by a
developer who is building a vacation resort. The
falls were the site for the filming of the movie, "Last
of the Mohicans." Acquisition of the property was
discussed at the monthly Council of State meeting
held in Research Triangle Park this morning.
Easley received unanimous approval on his motion
that the Secretary of the Department of
Environment and Natural Resources (DENR)
investigate condemnation of the property and
make a recommendation within two weeks to a
special session of the Council of State. The law
requires the Secretary to investigate and make a
request to the Council of State, before the State
may use its powers of condemnation in such
cases.
"I am encouraged by the strong show of support
by the Council of State for acquiring this
property," said Easley. "It is a piece of our natural
heritage and we should do all that we can to
preserve it for all North Carolinians. The waterfalls
that are a part of this property are truly amazing
and it would be a great loss if access to the falls
was restricted."
"The law allows for negotiation with the developer
for sale of the property during this two week
period. I think the Council made it pretty clear that
they will give me unanimous support to condemn
this land so the Secretary will be negotiating from
a position of strength. But, one way or another, we
are going to protect and maintain these falls for all
the people of North Carolina."
"Sam Neill of Henderson County made a
compelling presentation to the Council of State. He
is a strong advocate for preserving the falls and we
hope he will continue to be involved in the
process."
