: : : : I am sending this message with BlueSkyWomen in hopes that she can intercept you before reaching us here at Ft. Loudon. She is a dear freind and companion from my childhood village and can be trusted with my secret. ThreeTales' cousin, Davey Gunn, has warned me of what you have said, and I implore you to be silent on this matter. I know that ThreeTales has not yet heard your accusations, and I pray he never does.
: : : : You did see what you claim, but it was none of the lads that you suggest. Only I, and the lad, know the truth of the matter. Continuing this will only do harm to us all. Please let it be.
: : : : Besides, if you persist, I will inform ThreeTales of your advances last autumn at Ft. Freeland. Your goose will be cooked, as they say, and ThreeTales will have stuffed Seamus for his supper.
: : : : TwoBottle, wife of ThreeTales
: : : : (holder of more than one secret)
: : : Aha! A heroine enters the tale & raises the stakes.
: : : Seamus, beware!
: : Miss Elaine--
: : I thank you for your kind warning, but before you condemn me let me tell you about the incident of which TwoBottle speaks.
: : It seems that there had been a large celebration at which a succulent boar was roasted, and the rum was flowing quite liberally. In attendance at this gala feast, among others, was an Indian woman known as Wallowing Cow. This is the same Wallowing Cow who accosted me at Ft. Loudon earlier this year, and whom I believe tried everytime I saw her to get me drunk and have her way with me. Well, I consumed a bit more rum than I should have, and thought, "What the Hell...," and snuck into a tent I thought I had seen ole' WC go into a few moments before.
: : You can imagine my surprise...and TwoBottle's...when my error in navigation manifested itself. TwoBottle realized my state of, shall we say, total inebriation, and instead of knifing me, threw my sorry hide out of the tent with a resounding thump, which served to sober me up quite abit. I have always regretted my actions and it took a long time before I could look her in the face....and now THIS!
: : But...it is finished. Since I have met Nancy and have grown so fond of her...you might say, grown to love her...that there is no more rum, and no more Wallowing Cow. 'Nuff said.
: : Seamus
: Dear Seamus,
: That's quite a harrowing tale you tell. It appears TwoBottle has taken pity upon you & realizes you've suffered enough already what with your previous errors of judgment. We shan't speak of these scandals another moment. But pray the good Doctor Mary has not heard of your wallowing ... you ought might offer her rum & silver to keep her mouth shut. This is just the sort of ... ahem ... situation, she hopes to discover.
: Regards,
: Elaine
Dear Elaine--
Doc Mary can do and say as she wishes...my "wallowing" days are over. My recent experience with the Shawanese has taught me, among other things, that life is too short to be debauched, and that there are better ways to entertain oneself; besides, one feels MUCH better in the morning. AND...when one is fortunate to have the love of a lass such as I have, and is of a mind to return that affection, there is no need to look elsewhere. I will pay no ransom to keep anyone quiet about my past...I did it, I ain't real proud of some of it, but I admit it...! Sounds like I woulda liked to know Doc Mary back then...but, alas, it cannot be. C'est le guerre!
Here come the others. We are ready to leave for Ft. Loudoun. It appears there is a break in the weather coming...the western sky is beginning to show some promise as the clouds are higher and things are brightening somewhat, and we must take advantage of it. Fortunately we have no large streams to cross, as the rains of the past few days have swollen them to near flood proportions. There are only the three branches of Back Creek to cross, and they are well-bridged with stout log crossings and puncheon floors. We will soon be reunited with Cousins Malcolm and Davey Gunn...I cannot wait!
