: : Folks, if you've been to the waterfalls on Transylvania/Henderson County lines, in NC, during the last Mohican Gathering, or even if you've just seen the movie, you know the great beauty of that stretch of river ... what we affectionately term The River Walk.
: : We received this e-mail last night from one who was instrumental in gaining us access to the property. The contents are pitiful, yet hopeful. PLEASE HELP!
: : "Hi,
: : I enjoyed looking at your beautiful pictures of the Little River Falls on
: : your website. Glad to hear that your outing at Sterling went well. I think
: : that I helped one of you get in touch with Sterling management a few years
: : ago.
: : Well, it has been a weird ride trying to get the State to buys those 3 falls
: : you mention. We lost out to a private developer - and the State has been
: : complaining that Sterling didn't give them a proper chance to match the
: : developer's bid. Now it looks like the developer isn't going to protect the
: : property the way he promised - with 150 homes of up to 3500ft2 each. So now
: : the State has stated its intention to acquire the property through eminent
: : domain. Hundreds of local people have joined in a letter writing campaign
: : to support the State's effort.
: : Learn more about the situation at:
: : www.main.nc.us/eco
: : If you support this effort, you can encourage your mailing list or website
: : viewers to send emails to the NC Council of State as listed on the above
: : website.
: : Thanks, ..."
: : Let's do what we can to preserve this scenic area. Success means the area is open to all to enjoy forever!

: OK, Rich,
: Been there, done that!!

Hi everyone,
I thought I would just post this 'first reply' email sent to me from a Ms. Glenda Dean@dpi.state.nc.us. - I assume answering on behalf of Dr. Michael Ward:
>>>Thank you for your contacting us about this issue. We have directed your concerns to Stan Adams, Forest Resources.
>>>We trust that your concerns will be addressed in a satisfactory manner.
I'm not sure exactly what it means - whether good or bad, but at least they have taken note that even a visitor to the area cares about what happens to the Little River Corridor. And they have been good enough to reply.
Now, fingers crossed that it helps make a difference!! What Diana says is just too awful to contemplate! And that is exactly what I said in my email. Once this area is gone, it's gone for keeps!! So why destroy it for the sake of a housing estate!! That kind of beauty is created for us all! Not just a select few! To deny people the right to go there, to be a part of it, is simply criminal! And the loss of such places does not just affect NC but the world as a whole! We ALL lose!
I DO hope that everyone is too busy to post tonight - busy getting those emails off! It behooves us ALL to try and use this second chance to make sure the beaurocrats 'get it right'!!
Take care all!
Kate.
