Dear Malcolm,
Timothy has given me the numbing news that Seamus has been taken by that traitor, Ranger Ranck, who in reality is the notorius M. du Ranck, and has been given to the Shawanese. Col. Burd is livid that he could have gained the confidence of his officers here and was able to penetrate to the depths he did here at Augusta. He is ranting at this moment like a madman. I feel like I have been kicked by a mule. My stomach is a solid knot and I am physically ill. I have a constant copper taste in my throat and mouth. Malcolm...please tell me that it is not as bad as I am led to believe it will be for Seamus. Please tell me the stories I hear are exaggerated...please! Is there no hope? It is said he has been marked for torture and death by painting his face black...cuttahota...I believe Deux Chemises said. Timothy has gone with Deux Chemises to get Seamus away from his captors, but they are only two, and there are many Shawanese and French. Timothy does not know the woods and the ways of the savages, and my heart fears he, too, will be taken. Even though Timothy assured her he will be fine, that Seamus has taught him well, Gloria sits and stares blankly now. I cannot get her to do anything. She will not even respond to any kindness offered her. It is as if she is catatonic. What are we to do, Malcolm? Would Captain Croy allow you and Davey Gunn to go after them? What about many Flags and Three Tales? Do you think Sgt. Toot might be able to go? Would Col. Weiser give him leave to go after Seamus? The tears are streaming down my cheeks and wetting my chemise as if it were raining on me. Oh, Malcolm, I am terrified...much moreso than when Seamus went with Col. Armstrong to Kittanning. Deux Chemises says he might be sold to the Delawares at Kittanning and tortured for revenge. He said that Seamus was recognized by several warriors from Kittanning at Madame Montour's. He said that Seamus will be saved for the most brutal and horrible tortures since he is a great warrior and is respecetd as such by his captors. What kind of fool sense does that make?? Malcolm, I cannot think straight, my head is spinning like a whirlpool! I am afraid...so afraid that I have seen the last of my beloved, my Seamus...and for young Timothy, too....what will I do, Malcolm? What will I do....? What will Gloria do? Is Seamus's fate sealed? Oh, Dear God!! Help us all!!
I pray to the Almighty harder than I have ever prayed that he somehow be guided to safety. I am resolved to the fact that the Almighty may be the only hope we have.
Malcolm, please see what you can do...the Captain will surely understand...won't he?
