Asking the questions Enrique has posed is only a natural reaction to learning about such history, isn't it? You know, like after watching a movie or reading a book about horrible events, when one just feels like screaming "WHY???" You probably all know what I mean. Like others said, the answers aren't simple, and "eurocentric world view" or "manifest destiny" are only some of the key words. But I would like to point out one thing to Enrique: Indian people don't HAVE to live in reservations today, those lands are just the last little spots left to them where they still have some sovereignty. And marginated they are, he is right there. Also, those last few sovereign rights are still under frequent attack today, it just goes less noticed because it goes by way of laws and court decisions that are way too technical to make it into the media. The Supreme Court has not been very open towards respecting those sovereign rights during the last few years either but has instead chipped away from them little by little, and I'd be happy to go into detail on that by e-mail, should anyone wish to hear more.
