: I am wondering if anyone can tell me where I can get the patterns for Hawkeye's longshirt and some of Cora's dresses. I am sewing costumes for a school group who are going to do LOTM as a play. any help is appreciated. Thanks in advance.
My dear Stardances:
Your best best is to use patterns from Eagles View, which can be ordered at numerous sites on the web. The patterns are easy, with clear, concise directions and can be altered to fit most sizes. To duplicate the LOTM costuming most closely, for women use the French bodice pattern with a simple 3-4 yard skirt gathered to a waistband and a long chemise underneath; for Hawkeye's shirt, use the Frontier shirt, but cut the sleeves MUCH wider than the pattern and partially gather them at the mid-arm. When looking for authentic looking materials, skip the standard fabric shops and go looking in shops specializing in upholstery or wall fabric...there you will find the striped cottons and silk blends and flowered chintzes needed for the "1750's" look. Rough osnaburg or a weaver's linen will do for Hawkeye.
I just finished costuming a local high school production of "Tom Jones", which takes place circa LOTM, and had to put together scads of Cora-style dresses and men's shirts and breeches...the Eagles View Patterns are easy enough so that you can do the garments assembly line style if you have to...especially effective if you have a squadron of seamstresses willing to help!
Good luck in your costuming efforts!
