After watching LOTM with their Uncle Mark, the nephew and niece began to ask questions.
"Did that stuff really happen, Dr. Uncle Mark", asked Hannah.
"Well, it sure did. Happened during what some people call the French and Indian War. But, more correctly, it is called the Seven Years' War", replied Uncle Mark.
"And were there soldiers in redcoats and scouts like Hawkeye", asked Hiram.
Uncle Mark winked. "There sure were! In fact, you had some ancestors who fought in the Seven Years' War and were soldiers and scouts, and, well, they fought the French and Indians just like Hawkeye and those British soldiers. The soldiers in our family even wore kilts, cause they were Scottish!"
The nephew's and niece's eyes got big. "Wow!" they both cried. "Can you tell us about them, Dr. Uncle."
Druncle Mark sat back in his chair, let out a big sigh, and looked at Hannah and Hiram lovingly. "Sure. I'll tell you all about their adventures. You see there were several cousins. There was Seamus MacWilliam who had some Irish in him and he was a scout and also traded, sort of an 18th century businessman. And his cousins were scouts too, well, I guess you could call them longhunters because they used flintlock rifles with powder horns and wore Indian-like clothing. Anyway, they were your, let's see, your great great great great, maybe another great, uncles. Their names were Many Flags and Three Tales."
Hiram let out a whoop. "Were they Indians?"
"No", answered Dr. Uncle Mark, "but they were raised by some Indians so they had Indian sign names. And they had some cousins who were soldiers in a Highland regiment. Let's see. Oh yeh, they were named Davey Gunn and Malcolm MacWilliam. They were brothers but had different last names. Sort of curious, huh?"
"Tell us more!" shouted the nephew and niece.
"Ok, Ok, just hold onto your britches!" Dr. Uncle Mark began to relate the adventures of the 18th century ancestors to Hannah and Hiram.
