silk?

I am new to this site. My longhunter friends and I have always questioned Hawkeye's use of silk to patch a ball to make it go further (the scene in the fort as the couriers take off, I'm sure all of you LOTM experts know what I'm talking of)...I have never tried this, but our opinion is that silk, being slippery, would not aid in a further shot, even may make it fall short. Opinions??
