Now Doc M,
Being that I live right in the middle of tobacco growing country, it took me a minute to reck-a-nize that phrase "wad of tobacco." It is most commonly referred to as "chaw o' tobacky" round these here parts. I was wondering though, as you was studin' (studying) our backroads, if you happened upon any of our famous "bald peanut" stands. If cooked with a can of beer and the brine gets just the right amount of salty - they are quite a de-lite, right Ilsa??? But you must watch them carefully if cookin' 'em yerself. If the water balls (boils) off, they get "burnt slam up" real quick.
