Bill-
In reply to yor question,
But Brett, I'm not clear......are you saying that maybe they were also ISSUED carbines? Do you have documentation to that affect?
On page 86 of his book Redcoats, Yankees, and Allies, Mr. Brenton Kemmer states that;
"In 1759, Rogers' Rangers received special arms. In January, Rogers wrote to Mr. Cunningham, one of his contractors in New York, that the arms were in great need. Then in February, Cunningham wrote back that they were on their way. There has been some speculation that these were light infantry muskets or small caliber cut-down carbines."
For this bit of info Mr. Kemmer cites these sources:
John R. Cuneo, Robert Rogers of the Rangers (New York:Richardson & Steirman, 1987) 144; Spring and Bray,1:38; Rogers' Journal,73-74.
I guess for now the TRUE identity of this mystery musket will remain unclear. But it does seem very possible that since many light infantry companies were issued carbines in the same year (1759), this mystery musket just might have been a carbine. It is a very interesting possibility!
Bill, good luck in your search for historical truth!
