Hi Rich, Elaine, and all the rest,

We survived the new millenium turnover here too. My computer works and shows the right date, the house is warm, the electricity is on, and we have lots of food in the freezer, so I guess we're OK for the time being.

We celebrated at the downtown festivities this year. They had a street carnival with lots of multicultural events (mostly indoors thank heavens). When a bomb threat closed the largest venue, everyone just moved the party outdoors. At 11:30 everyone began drumming on everything from skin drums to oatmeal boxes, and continued until midnight. At first I thought the 7' millenium drum that several carvers made for the celebration had been caught inside the closed building, but I saw in the paper that it was in the town square with the rest of us. By the time we had that many people drumming, we couldn't hear the big one. At midnight we had fireworks. The event was non-alcoholic and the crowds (25,000) were very well behaved. For all its size, Anchorage still has a small town atmosphere. It was a really cool celebration. Fortunately the temperature stayed around -1 with a slight breeze rather than the -40 wind chill which was predicted, so it was cool in atmosphere only.
