: Thanks, Rich. It was the hanging at Mankato that was mentioned last night. Apparently Lincoln had pardoned quite a few warriors. I had never thought of Lincoln in relation to all of these happenings in the west.
I didn't watch the show (I don't get History Channel, boo-hoo!), but I'm a Lincoln afficionado, and I read in my giant "Lincoln: An illustrated biography" that officials had recommended the hanging of 303 Indians, and Lincoln intervened and reviewed every case, dismissing charges in all but 39 cases. (This was December of 1862, right?)
A lighter Lincoln anecdote, this one I can't find, but I know I read it. Lincoln joked that Minihaha's wife must be named Miniboo-hoo.
