: The two 'tests' for me were that little cat that Cora sees
My grandmother (1895-1986) used to tell "lion" stories all the time. My favorite was the time when she was 12 and was trapped in the outhouse all night by the mountain lion sitting out side waiting for her. According to her, it wasn't until the Depression when CCC came in to build camps and start the BRP that the big cats became wary. This area was full of stories of people traveling by horseback and wagon, being stalked by the big cats all the way, in the hopes of picking off live stock or (in the folk wife vein) young children. I once asked her if she actually knew of anyone who lost a child to one of the cats, and she said no, but her cousins best friend did. Some things never change. But the scene of Cora and the cat has always been perfect to me. It's her first glimps of the danger that hides in every shadow.
