Watched the director's cut dvd last night, and let me just say that the improvement in image and sound quality was incredible, over the 1994 laserdisc version!!! The Dolby Digital soundtrack blows away the pro-logic that I had been listening too. And even without anamorphic enhancement (something us widescreen tv people crave), the image was amazing, very detailed, with virtually no artifacts or aliasing. The jumpiness from the new editing was a minor annoyance.
For the most part I thought the new cut was good. I like some of the new scenes, such as the expanded battle at the fort. I do miss the Clannad song though. But regardless of how I like or dislike the director's cut, I think we really need to be able to get the original theatrical cut on DVD as well. I like the way Anchor Bay does this sort of thing -- they release both cuts as a double-disc set (i.e., Halloween and Army of Darkness). We could have the director's cut AND the theatrical cut, along with some extras perhaps? Fox? Anyone listening?
