That's an interesting question. It depends on the timing. It could be one person, or at another time it could be another person. And of course, in reality, it was neither!!

I strongly urge you to spend some time exploring this website and reading the excellent analysis of Cooper's Leatherstocking Tales and Natty Bumppo's life, which will provide you with AN answer (though possibly not THE answer), and to read the book, which is well worth reading!
