By no means do I make any claims to have any idea what is going on there on the set of "The Patriot," for I don't. After speaking at length with numerous extras from the set of LOTM, I do have some idea of what went on there, and it all sounds so very familiar!
It is hard, when you know the right way to do something to ignore seeing it done imperfectly, and that's what a re-enactor/extra has to do ... basically compromise their extensive know-how on a subject in favor of the director's wishes.
The director is trying to attain an artistic acheivement that will draw audiences. He's not, necessarily (and to varying degrees, depending on the director), trying to make a docudrama correct in every detail.
My point is, LOTM had the same problems and came out kind of OK in the long run. I wouldn't give up hope on "The Patriot" just yet!
Once his gag-order is lifted, perhaps Soldier #2 can shed some more light on this, from first hand experience in the making of both films!
