: Dana,
: I'm ready whenever anyone else is. Suggestion: start with "The Deerslayer" so we can meet Hawkeye when he started on his first warpath. Then it is an interesting contrast to look at his personality 15 years later in "The Last of the Mohicans", or 17 years later in his one and only love affair in "The Pathfinder". He changes radically as a person as the books progress. This would also give us a chance to meet Chingachgook and Hist O Hist before Uncas was born.

Elaine's suggestion for alternating Cooper with a modern book sounds good to me. Lucky for me I work at a University; the library here has both The Deerslayer and Indian Killer available and they will deliver them to my office -- probably tomorrow! The reading/discussion schedule sounds fine, too. Discussing the Deerslayer (1-2 or 3) during the week of Nov 7 and Indian Killer (1-2) the week of the Nov 14.
As for leading the discussion, we could try a free-for-all to start and see how it goes. Anybody may post their thoughts and interpretations for others to see and comment on, and let the threads flow as they will. If we need more structure, we can always add it later.
Also, if some want to read one book and not both, the discussions on one wouldn't have to stop when another begins -- the beginning dates might only designate when to have read a section and add it to the continuing discussions. How does that sound?
