To learn about history, you must read history books, and preferably ones written by people who lived within 50 years of the events described. Otherwise, you are subject to history as viewed through the changed perceptions of modern thinking.

Dear Gayle,
I put this excerpt from your post on my frig to remind me to be careful with my historical fiction fixation! Really! No kidding.
I was wondering if "The Autobiography of Benjamin Franklin" would qualify as good historical reference material. Was he too far ahead of his time to be considered your typical 18th century gent? It sure is a fasinating book. I had trouble remembering it had been written so long ago.
