I noticed something similar a while back when watching the movie. When the Redcoat recruitor is at John Cameron's place, somebody mentions that Fort William Henry is "two nights and a bit from here." Later, when Hawkeye and company are escorting the Lieutenant and the ladies, it is mentioned that the same fort is "a night and a bit" away. The next day, they arrive at John Cameron's place to find it destroyed. How did the fort suddenly become so much closer to the Cameron settlement? Maybe this has been mentioned before, but I found it interesting. Another blooper to add to your list!
In case you were wondering why I attatched my message to this string, my point is that it is all part of good movie-making. As for the point about which end of the lake we should be seeing, Gen Webb states it best: "Tedious isn't it, but that's the lay of the land."
