: Dana,
: thanks for the link! I just took a look there. Sounds like some sort of would be aristocracy with an overdosis of patriotism. Education on history is a fine thing, but to have a club membership depending on ancestry, how ridiculous. I can well imagine that those people might have a hard time admitting the darker sides of American history, or answering the question whether mass immigration is a good thing in a way where the evaluation of this century and of former centuries is consistent.

Well, firstly I will admit I have not been to the link yet, so perhaps I speak out of turn, but I dont think it silly to perhaps take pride in the fact that an ancestor helped establish our American states as an entity. Now, having said that, I dont think I would be elitist about it either. Nor would I rest on the laurals of some ancient and DEAD ancestor. I dont want to be punished for the deeds of dead ancestors, nor should I claim their laurals either. But I can see why a documented ancestor who had fought in the Rev War might be a source of pride for some. Just as a documented ancestor who had fought and won the Battle of the Bighorn might be a source of pride for others.
Fair enough?
