Dear Miss Polly Anna,
I must ask your forgiveness for my not having met you at the apple orchard the other day, as we had planned. I was somewhat INDISPOSED and simply lost track of the day. Very uncivil of me, to be sure. It puts me in mind of Great Aunt Morphia who suffered so dreadfully from - - what is the name of that illness where you can't remember the names of things? - -oh, well, whatever.
At any rate, I noticed in a ramble through that lovely stand of chestnut trees by the riverside that the chestnuts are beginning to drop, and if you could see your way clear to risk another afternoon, I thought we might picnic while we gather a goodly bushel or two toward the Christmas festivities. I promise I will write myself a BIG note and stick it on the front of the icebox so there will be no chance of my missing you again.
And please, dear, do feel free to bring charming Basil along. He would find it so refreshing to flutter through the little patches of blackberry bushes that grow on the river bank and snack on the plump, ripe berries that are so plentiful at this time of year. They add so much flavor to any meal.
