Well, Joy...I didn't get to see LOTM on the big screen the first time I watched it...nor the 2nd, nor the 102nd. It wasn't until the Gathering of last year that I finally saw it on the big screen. I don't know whether seeing it that LARGE would have changed my initial impression or not, but watching the video at home was still pretty powerful. As were many others, I was swept up into the story right from the opening credits, with those beautiful blue mountains rolling away into the distance. I continued to be mesmerized throughout the Elk Hunt and the rest of the movie...but what stuck with me after the first viewing, and played over and over in my mind until I could get home to watch the movie AGAIN, was one image: Hawkeye running through the tall grass to get to Cora. That will always be the essence of the film for me. The choreography of that moment, the slow-motion image of him racing, leaping, pushing, shoving, shooting and fighting his way to rescue her, against all odds, long, black hair streaming behind, is my very favorite part of the film, and always will be.

So there you have it. Big surprise, eh? ;o)
