: What happened 7 years ago this week? Why the theatric premiere of Last of the Mohicans, of course!

: The scene that left the strongest impression on me was not the violence of the ambush or even the massacre but when Duncan was burned alive. The raw brutality of the Hurons and the pitiful agony of the Major really hit me. The look on Nathaniel's face as he sights in on Heyward for the mercy shot - total regret but he knows its the humane thing to do. Nathaniel seems surprised by Heywards grand sacrifice and I think he respects him for this.

: Anyone else like to share their impressions from their first screening of Mohicans?

Joy,

Would we LIKE to share our impressions?? Don't put me on! That is probably our favorite pastime in the WHOLE WORLD!

Yes, yes, yes, I'd like to share my impressions!

First of all, the music - the intense Indian drum sequence of the introduction - simply mesmerized me before any scenes even appeared on the screen. I was captured body and soul right there! Then, not having read anything about the movie before I saw it for the first time, I was completely mystified throughout the Elk Hunt as to WHAT they were doing. It was a magnificent, dramatic dash through forest and water - but I kept thinking WHERE ARE THEY GOING? Then when Hawkeye fired his rifle and I saw the elk fall, I thought it was the most wonderful piece of film I had ever seen. I still listen to that music over and over and thrill to the freedom and tension and pure joy of the chase in it. But each scene and each piece of the plot and the acting became my favorite as the movie progressed. Each one was an experience in itself - what a masterful director Mann is!
