Good point, Chris! I know quite a few intelligent, well-read young folks. And on the other side of the coin, I know several folks of my parent's generation who are none of those things. My own first father-in-law bragged that he'd never read a book! So, it isn't ALL a generational thing, by any means, though to be sure, many of today's kids ARE used to quicker gratification than they can get from a good book.
