: though I dont have any suggestions off the top of my head (though I would hazard a guess that any book that deals with (George) Washington's early life would be a good start), I found your question interesting, as I was looking thru Don Troiani's latest art book ("Soldiers in America, 1754 - 1865") & the very first print (pg.3) is entitled "Soldier, Virginia Regiment, 1754" (!)...
: It also gives a brief background on the raising of this force & their uniform (materials, etc)...
: Troiani is probably the most historically accurate military artist of the periods in question around today.
: His larger works are researched for years (a couple actually went thru 20 yrs of research!) before brush ever touches canvas. I wish he'd print his notes on the Civil War, he has such details as to include what color horse a paticular subject was riding that day, or the position of the sun (etc)...
