IMHO, you won't be disappointed. Even my wife, who previously could have cared less about such things, notices the vast quality difference between DVD and VHS and will only view the DVD version of a movie when possible. Really good players can be had for less than $300 now, and they often come with 5 free movies and 10 or so free rentals from an online rental store.

I've been waiting for Fox to release LOTM on DVD for 2 years now, I just hope they do a good job with it (Fox has not been very supportive of DVD so far). This is probably the best chance we'll get to have a Director's Cut or Special Edition or whatever issued of LOTM.
