Hi all --
Donna and I got to explore Fort William Henry at Lake George on Friday. It is amazing to walk there, knowing that at that site (even though the fort is a recreation), Monro really did battle against Montcalm -- they really existed!! Donna and I were talking about how with LOTM the lines of fiction and reality blur, but here was a character coming to life for us out of our passion for the movie. His office really was here, he really went through the gate to surrender to Moncalm, who really was over there ... They come alive when you are there, and it makes your hair stand on end.
We also visited the ruins of Fort George, spitting distance (what, 1/4 mile?) from Fort William Henry. It played a bit part in the F&I war, none at all in LOTM. Mostly because it was just barely started before being abandoned.
If you ever go to Fort William Henry, be sure to visit the park area east of the Fort. It has some beautiful statues/monuments to other leading characters of the time, and one just gorgeous statue of a young Indian man -- sure, it could have been Uncas in braids -- kneeling beside a natural spring. The park also has some interesting signs and bits of information, for those interested in the history of the area.
Finally, there's an icecream shop just west of the fort with the best icecream -- vanilla with miniature Reese's peanutbutter cups (that is, icecream with chocolate and peanutbutter - to die for!).
Cheers,
Sarah
