Hey, Flintlock; welcome to the board and glad to read your post..yes, it always amazes me how some can get around the backwoods; but reading (or trying to read Mr. Cooper; - Gayle help me out here! - this was not an issue with the "long carabine" in the books!). In reality; a few weeks ago, trying to get about the back roads of North Carolina; we needed a tracker, or lead car...Eric!
So maybe back in those days; someone knew the trails; like Hawkeye in the LOTM; and this is again why he was so important of a person; he knew how to get around! And which trail to take!
I think anyone who could get about without so much as a by your leave; must have been an important person; because I belive that trails were hard to find but some must have known how to get around with them...
