: : Tom, you are nothing but a closed minded dumbass.  It's people like you that still contend the South fought the War of Northern Agression to save slavery.  We fought to keep you stupid blue bellied bastards out of our buisness period!  And your fine yankee government wouldn't even let blacks fight until we killed too many of your cracker ass brothers. : Champ, in less powerful language, I intend to agree with you on your stand, both historically and personally. It is my opinion that Tom, the "gentleman" in question, is not concerned with teaching all of history, but what I like to call, HALF - ASSED history. For the sake of preserving his opinions of our nation's history, he is willing to demean ours in an attempt to destroy historical fact, which is what the federal government, via our school systems and historical propaganda, have tried for over a century. The key here is not to become upset, but to simply regard this Tom character for what he is. Simply, he is one of two things.
:  First, he may be one of the everyday idiots who merely wishes to cause a stir among true historians by posting an elaborate argument, thereby attaining his sadistical "cheap thrills". 
: Or, he may be one of those who has accepted fully the decades of entrenched yankee - favoring propaganda concerning the ideal that the Union's cause for war was, and forever would be, the freedom of the African Americans from bondage. If this is the case, he is not the cheap sadist, but through no fault of his own, has been taught to be a closed minded machine, adhering to whatever damned fool patriotic story of the Union anyone will feed him. Tom, stop reading your copy of "Uncle Tom's Cabin" (no pun intended) for the thousanth time and read a real history book for once.  
: On a more intellectual level, let us attempt to put personal insults aside. Consider this; if General Robert E. Lee was an advocate of slavery, then Generals George Armstrong Custer, William T. Sherman, and others who shared their ideals, must have been true humanitarians of their time. And if Lincoln was a great emancipator, by virtue of the Emancipation Proclamation, who, pray tell, did he free? Was he not also, in his earlier political career an extreme advocate of secession and even REBELLION? If he was, he certainly changed his political tune when there were votes to be won in 1860. In regards to his political and racial sentiments, consider reading, if you wish to exert yourself, Hofstadter's "American Political Tradition and the Men Who Made It". You may learn something - if you dare.
