: Most men portraying the typical 18th soldier as clean shaven is just as farby as those who insist wearing a long beard!!!!! Soldiers were lucky to have been shaven once a week! On campaigne they usually would go longer. The soldiers at Fort William Henry I would bet had over a weeks growth. I keep my beard at about a 2-3 weeks growth year-round. The week before an important event, I do not shave my neck or checks , then the morning I take off- I get out my electric beard trimmer and buzz it down to a weeks growth. It appears as a very natural unattended "beard" as most of the common soldiers in such a situation would have had. To be clean shaven is not authentic!, It depends on the situation.

Though I understand the reasoning for Eric shaving [or not ;-) ],
I agree with you on this. Until recently I reenacted not only the War Between The States [as a Confederate guerrilla hoss-soldier], but also for a spell with Butler's Rangers.
My "look" with Butler's was a campaign look, and anybody who knows the history of Butler's can tell you they spent alot of time on the trail, away from civilization [except to raid & burn!]. Chances are slim that most saw a razor until they returned to post.
There is a movement within the BAR [Brigade of the American Revolution -- an org' I belong to] for more of a clean shaven look. While facial hair were not in vogue [unless you were a Hessian] I believe that any units portraying a campaign look rather than garrison should look like a campaign unit.
Incidently, some fellow "Highlanders" have asked me [since I am BAR & they are "newbies"] to forgo my other persona[s] & help form a new unit in the Pacific NW. This I'm doing, the unit is
Capt. MacKay's Highland Coy of the Queen's Rangers [we plan to do a campaign persona of the 42nd Regt during the F&I War, and on occassion take up the standard of "Bonnie Prince Charlie" :-) ]... Though are Q.R.'s persona wont be campaign, I will not enforce a no facial hair policy [as long as they are not exoctic in fashion]...
Anyhow, sorry to blabber on so, I plan a website for the new unit [pipes & all] and will let y'all know when its up & running...
By-the-by, which 18th century unit & org' are you with?
