The Fate of Jack....

Maybe I just missed this, but whatever happened to Jack and the others who left the fort? Do we find out at all? Also, is Jack a character in the Leatherstocking Tales? Just curious. I've never posted here before, but just thought I'd drop my 2 bits in!
