: Dear Elaine & Victoria,

: At the risk of ruining my carefully cultivated reputation as a slavering slave to anything Hawkeye/DDL related, I do wish to make clear that I pay a lot of attention to OTHER things in this movie and other films, as well...even, sometimes, films that have no bearing on Hawkeye and don't star DDL. ;o)

: I am sure that Mann played with time and characters. I've certainly learned that much on this site, if I wasn't aware of it before. But I still do not see any cause to believe Magua's words about the Grey Hair had any hidden symbolism. And I am frequently aware of symbolism in MANY movies, lest you think I am a complete dolt, here. I just don't think EVERY movie is filled with symbolism. Some are just what they seem to be, and that's what I believe the case is with LOTM. It really isn't a matter of my being obtuse, uninformed, or even distracted by Hawkeye. It's just my opinion in this instance.

: Pat, help me out, here!

: And Victoria, please do post more on history here. We are all interested in it, though some of us may not have as much specific knowledge in certain areas as others. As a matter of fact, I copied your entire Grey Hair discussion to date to forward to Gayle, as I knew she would be fascinated. I, for one, enjoy the board much more when there are posts of ALL types appearing.

Hello Marcia!

At the risk of further ruining your carefully cultivated reputation as Hawkeye's #1 slave & prima competitor of Dr. Mary's, let me add this;

You have always shown an astute awareness of all things, whether symbolic or not, in LOTM. You've demonstrated quite an appreciation for the discussions of the film, the novel, and the history, as well as added your own thoughts, observations, and interpretations. Add to that your humor ... no one thinks of you as a dolt.

I know this matter of symbolism, or lack thereof, is your opinion & that it has been reached with much thought and consideration. I do hope you did not think the implication of the posts was that you couldn't grasp the symbolism because of the Hawkeye Factor! It was nothing more than jesting ... truly!

I agree with you regarding symbolism in film. I'd add that most films are what they appear to be on face value ... no symbolic, profound meaning. In LOTM, I believe it's present, though I don't believe by any means that it is so evident as to be non-debatable. It is, if it exists at all, subtle and intriguing. As both you and Pat have shown, a good argument can be made for either position. We are offering opinions, that's all.

Makes for good discussion!

Funny that you mentioned Gayle. I was thinking she would've enjoyed the "Grey Hair" discussions tremendously.

Clear it up any?

Elaine
