Thanks, Champ! Truly a site deserving of recognition!
I just wanted to add that it was this SAME village, under the leadership of Black Kettle, that was attacked 4 years later on the banks of the Wash-ta River in what is now Oklahoma. Black Kettle & his wife were killed in this attack ... to the rollicking tune of "Garry Owen"!! What a mixed picture ... the stillness of a winter's dawn on the Plains. Snow on the ground. A peaceful & sleeping Cheyenne village. Then, thundering hooves of calvary horses & the band plays on! Really, they played music! Finally, gunshots, screams, & blood.
It should be noted, in fairness, that there is evidence to suggest that some of the young warriors in Black Kettle's band had been guilty of raids, etc.
