: : : 3. Has anyone out there tried to run full speed through a eucalyptus grove - with full rifle and gear? I have. It is just about imposible. In my opinion, this is the greatest failing of the film - possibly a result of shooting in the south rather than NY.

: Well, you've gone and spoiled ALL my fun! Actually, though, what you see in the film is the cousin of Mountain Laurel, Catawba Rhododendron.
: To answer your question ... maybe running a well worn animal trail? Or, the canopy of old growth forests kept the forest floor relatively bare. Anyway, they WERE running, weren't they?!

Yup, rhododendron. Round here we call them rhododendron hells. Makes off trail hiking very interesting. They generally grow on the south facing slope between the creek and the cliff face. There is generally a gap between the rhododendron and the cliff that you can squeeze by, or wade the creek. But if you gotta go through, carrying your pack in front seems to work or else you get hung up something awful. Gotta be pretty agile to do it. Generally your pursuers are having as bad a time as you are, and if you do it right you can reach the other side and skedaddle before they reach the end. Sorta like Brer Rabbits briar patch.
