Good and thoughtful points, but whether you look at events through today's or yesterday's lens, I think this is true: There is always a grave difference between executing those believed to be criminals, killing enemies in battle, and torturing someone. I doubt the human brain has evolved so far in the last 2000 years that we actually approach these frames of mind differently now.

Let's just face it, we are capable of great horrors.
