In English class, the "Protaganist" is the one you are 'for'". This is true of Hawkeye and DDL. You are rooting for him and his companions, your emotions are engaged in his struggles. Whether it is the way the character is written, or the combination of the character and DDL's flawless acting, nobody else in this movie comes even close to the power of Hawkeye.
