: The R2 version is the original heatrical version of the film and includes a trailer and isolated musical track. It's better than the R1 Director's cut.
If you live on the OTHER side, this may be for you: the answer to the dreams of all those who simply can't stand the Director's Cut version of LOTM, yet want the film on DVD. Courtesy of Gil:
Well the technical details are below:
2.35:1 Anamorphic Widescreen
Dolby Digital 5.1 (so no DTS in this version)
R2 PAL format (your TV/DVD must support PAL format)
Subtitles and audio in multiple languages
Running time: approx. 108 min (note the PAL format differences compared to NTSC)
The Extras:
Theatrical Trailer (by Warner Bros)
Isolated Musical Score (magnificent :) )
Overview:
Well, although there could be more extras (there's no other film needing those more :) ), this R2 DVD release is very good in my opinion. It has DD5.1 audiotrack compared to the DTS one in R1, but it's excellent (I've heard complaints about the DTS audio, but this DD5.1 track truly shines and the dialogue is easy to hear). The picture quality is good (if the source material is the same in both versions, the R2 version will have better quality, since the PAL format has better resolution than NTSC). This european release is distributed by Warner Bros. unlike the R1 and the trailer starts with WB logo. The trailer comes with good picture and audio and the musical track contains the whole film score in DD5.1 format. The main diiference between R1 and R2 is of course, that this is the original theatrical version of the film, so all those lost scenes are there and the Clannad song too (many people prefer this version of the film, but I can't comment since I haven't seen the Director's Cut) . DVD menus are also totally different, and while R2 menus are beautifully crafted, they aren't animated. I know that true fan of the film would have both versions, but unfortunately I don't have access to the Director's Cut :(.
