: : OK, the "short" list of events, and some background on same, to possibly fill our day of competition at the 2002 Great Mohican Gathering, courtesy of Lady Ann. Theresa has already offered to sell tickets - :) - to an unlisted event that sort of took shape via our E-Mail list ... so, things are lookin' up!
: : Anyway, peruse!

: : I had a long conversation with Bob Penland last night...he is the head
: : honcho of the French Broad Muzzleloaders....and they are DELIGHTED to host the 2002 Mohican Gathering! They are going to make their shooting range available for us on the 20th from 1:00 p.m. until 5:00 p.m. and will provide rangers to supervise the shoot, coordinate the types of competition we want to do (there are quite a few types of contests...and I will need the advice and assistance of those Mohicanites who regularly shoot to figure out what we want to do), provide targets (he asked me what kind they should get for us....I came within inches of saying "Hurons" and "Duncan tied to a stake" but figured he wouldn't understand....), and even help us with trophies, if we wanted them. And get this...their group is trying to figure out a way to get us on their insurance policy as "guests", so we don't have to pay for a separate rider! Such nice folks! And the reason they are being so accomodating? According to Mr. Penland, they saw the good press we got in Asheville during the past several Gatherings and decided we would be a fun group to work with!
: :
: : Sooooo....we have to decide on the contests. We can have:
: : 1) target shooting at 25, 50 or 100 yards or a combination of the three
: : 2) a "wood walk"...which is a hike through the woods shooting a targets (takes about two hours to complete the course)
: : 3) a "Seneca Run", which is running through a timed course shooting at targets (kind of like an Olympic biathalon without the snow)...we can do this one "only if the neighbor's cows aren't out" Mr. Penland said (!)
: : 4) Tomahawk throw
: : 5) Knife throw
: : 6) Bow and arrow (This one is for me...I used to shoot competitively, and was even of the University of Florida team for several years!)
: : 7) Footrace on open ground (Mr. Penland said that contestants must not be afraid of stepping in cow manure!).
: : 8) a trap shooting contest for those shooting smooth bore weapons...I don't know how many of the guys shoot these, but there may be enough to warrant such a contest.
: : 9 & 10) The Alice/cliff competition and the Kiss competition can, of course, take place as well as they don't need any special location (Hey, I wasn't kidding about all this!) Since I know next to nothing about shooting competitions, I thought I would throw it open the the Mohican shooters to decide what contests they would favor...we can't do them all because of time constraints. Could you take another informal poll of those attending so I can narrow down our schedule?
: : (NOTE: We need to bring our own equipment, i.e. guns, hawks, knives, bows, etc.)

: : Got it? Consider this another branch of the informal poll, already passed along to many of you.
: : Do contact Ann, at: acolby@co.seminole.fl.us just as soon as you can. OR, let your thoughts out right here ... for ALL to see!!!! Dare you?

My thoughts, as I`ve been in dozens of shooting matches, are;
Target Shooting should be 25 and 50 yards with maybe a side match, for bragging rights, at a large gong at 100 yards.
Woods walk would be fun, but it`s very time consuming and could also be a non spectator match.
If the Seneca Run is set up so it can be watched, I say do it! They can be VERY fun to do and watch!!
Trap Shoot only if we have enough and the time. But a "smoothbore trap shoot demo" may be interesting to show the many uses of a musket.
Everything else would be fine and fun.
Just my thoughts on the subject. Sounds like fun.
