~ The Fifth Annual Great Mohican Gathering, 2002 Style, Update: The dates are Thursday, June 20 - Sunday, June 23. Right now, we've more or less got all volunteers in place and are finalizing the bookings of facilities, etc. If you are not on our mailing list for updates, but would like to be, please drop us an E-mail or use the form on the 2002 Gathering Page. Things are not yet carved in stone, but we do have some interesting scenarios emerging, including the possibility of a Mohican Musician appearing. We anticipate opening up the reservation period in the first half of February. As usual, we've updated the Gathering Page to reflect what we know at the moment.

~ Got me, Ariel ... I had you figured as a female!

~ E-Mail of the Week: "Any chance there will be a making of a movie about 'The Last of the Po' Ricans'" Sorry, but we do get stuff like this!

~ This just in ... A possible Ariel's Cabin Volunteer has arrived as I was typing this. "Kate will be a hard act to follow, especially since I won't be bringing those beautiful hand made quilts, etc!" Sentiments I whole-heartedly agree with, and which have probably caused many a folk to shy away from that particular task. Nobody can be Kate. Just be yourself!

~ Regarding the "Mohicans are still here" controversy: As I've said, I am reading "The Lasting of the Mohicans: History of An American Myth" [available through our book store]. I'm just in the early stages, and by NO means do I agree with all the authors' [there are 2 of them] conclusions, but, a couple of comments of note:

1 - "'Mohicans' [the story] is a myth, in the sense that it presents symbolically rich characters in a landscape, whose adventures and eventual tragic conclusion are also rich in symbols." That hits hit on the head ... the last of the Mohicans is a symbol. Period.

2 - "It [the study] is about 'Mohicans' as a survivor." And that it [the story] and they [the people] have been. I wonder how many folks would even know of the Mohicans existance if not for the story? Would Mohicans be relegated to Pequots?

This all gives me the idea for a new essay in the Mohican Musings section, so, I guess, watch for that on the horizon. By the way , a big "thank-you" to Nancy, of Ohio, for sending the book my way. "Hope you enjoy it - with all the obvious hard work & dedication you've put into the web site, you deserve a 'freebie' from a stranger!" One of the joys of being here!!

~ On a very sad note, long-time Mohicans friend, Jo, has a mother who appears to be on her death bed. Please send her your prayers.

~ Just one more thought from me on the chasm that formed here back in late July. I know, I can't seem to let that go. [Not alone there ... it affects some that I am aware of, peripheral to it all, still!] Oh well, that's me. I feel, still, so very ambiguous about it all. On the one hand, there were some real-life issues that needed to be addressed & resolved. It was important stuff, not to be trivialized, and the ramifications of it NOT be addressed by me in a more timely fashion are still affecting my life as I write. On the other hand, I wish it all came down differently. There are personalities no longer here that were friends, who I shared many a laugh and advent'cha with, who I miss dearly ...

And that's that. A real uplift, wasn't it?!?

Just follow the Happy Trail ...
