Scott...it was good to meet you. I'm sorry I didn't spend more time with you, but a Sgt.'s lot leaves little time for visitation or relaxation. I take care of my privates (hmmmm!!) and do the officers' biddings (hmmmm!). We DO take our 18th century lifestyle seriously. Aye, I was cold. Aye, I was tired. But, there is nothing quite like marching at the head ( we Grenadiers are given the place of honor) of a 1/4 mile column of the King's men, all in red, yet in many different regimental uniforms, shouting our orders, the chaos of battle, the cannon reverberating the earth, the smoke from muskets so thick you can't see the enemy, being as one with your comrades in the regiment and with others of the same ilk, etc., etc.
We Highland Grenaders (42nd Royal Highlanders) are a close lot and when we fell in the first wave of attack on Sunday, we passed the flask several times as we watched the remainder of the battle occur, caught between the Continental and British lines, keeping our heads down as our comrades fired overtop of us and stepped overtop of us as they advanced. One cannot describe the feelings one has, at Divine Worship, fully kitted for battle, as Pvt. Goodrich sang the hymns and we prayed for our fallen people of Sept. 11, and their families.
And Scott, come out again, bring your son, and we can talk of reenacting. It is the finest family avocation there is.
God bless these United Colonies.
Sgt. Malcolm MacWm., 42nd RHR, Grenadiers
