Something I read in the paper this morning -- "If we
keep going under the credo of 'an eye for an eye'
sooner or later we'll be blind." Events like this
show us at our best and at our worst. Please remember
that we are dealing here with terrorists, not people
who are Muslim, or all who live in Middle Eastern countries.
The people who did this are no more followers of Islam
than Timothy McVeigh was a Christian. I've lived long
enough to hear all the talk of "nuke them gooks back to
the stone age," and then watched young men and women return
to us in body bags. I hope we all use this horrible tragedy
as a starting point of coming together for the sake of
freedom from fear and the pursuit of justice rather than
of bunch of jingoistic name-calling and swaggering ass-
kicking. What really brought this home to me was my best
friend's husband being cursed at and told to go back home
where he belonged. His crime? He happens to be very tan
and wears a beard...and he IS home where he belongs, thank
you very much. Just my opinions -- take 'em or leave 'em
as you will.
