Irish actor Daniel Day-Lewis, who is staying in New York at the moment, immediately offered his help to the emergency services after the terrorist attacks on Tuesday. Day-Lewis tried to give blood but was turned away because the queues were too long. He then made himself useful by transporting boxes of ice to hospitals to keep the donated blood cold. He said, 'I had to help in some small way, any way I could. This whole situation is so awful, it cannot be described in words. We hope to go back and give blood when we can. But for now this is the most useful thing I can do.'

: www.peoplenews.com reports that Daniel went down to offer to give blood was turned away because the lines were so long. He then carried boxes of ice for the blood going to the hospitals and then commented about this tragedy. I can't quote verbatim here but check in at the link above. It looks as though our hero IS indeed a hero.
